Advanced Technology Lens Implants, Raleigh-Durham
Standard, monofocal lens implants traditionally used in cataract procedures provide good functional distance vision, but offer little benefit for a full range of vision. That means people with monofocal lens implants will still need reading glasses from time to time after surgery. Now for an additional charge, there is a new option – Advanced Technology Lens Implants that are designed to improve vision at all distances. Dr. Kelly uses Advanced Technology Lens Implants such as Crystalens® and Tecnis® to provide Kelly Eye patients with a more natural range of vision.
Does this mean freedom from glasses? For many patients, yes. With Advanced Technology Lens Implants, many people can read, drive and do other tasks after their surgery without glasses. In fact, during the clinical trials, 80% of Advanced Technology Lens Implant patients reported never wearing glasses after having the lens implants in both eyes, compared to only 8% of patients with standard, monofocal lens implants.
Be sure to discuss the advantages of Advanced Technology Lens Implants with one of our Raleigh cataract experts when you schedule your cataract surgery.
Standard Lens
Monofocal
CORRECTS CATARACTS ONLY
Provide vision at one distance and best for you if you don’t mind wearing glasses to achieve a full range of vision. Keep in mind removing your natural lens and implanting a standard lens greatly reduces your ability to see up close without glasses, even if you are able to see up close now.
Strengths
• Provide clearer vision for distance
• Often provide independence from glasses for many activities
• Proven safe and effective in millions of procedures
• Glare and halos around lights are rarely noticed
Limitations
• Unable to change focus for both near and distance vision
• Glasses are generally needed for either near or distance vision and sometimes both
• Does not correct astigmatism
No additional costs above insurance co-pays, co-insurance and/or deductible.
Advanced Technology Lens
Accommodating
CORRECTS CATARACTS AND PRESBYOPIA
Crystalens® is the only presbyopia correcting lens for cataract eye surgery patients that provides a single focal point throughout a continuous range of vision and uses the natural focusing power of the eye. Best if you have an active lifestyle and do not want the hassle of glasses.
Strengths
• Excellent distance vision day and night
• Very good intermediate vision
• Good reading vision
• Often provide independence from glasses for many activities
• Works like your natural lens
Limitations
• Can take weeks or months to experience the full range of vision
• Glasses may still be needed for some tasks
• May require fine-tuning with laser vision correction
• Must be a candidate
Additional costs above insurance co-pay, co-insurance and/or
deductible apply.
Multifocal
CORRECTS CATARACTS AND PRESBYOPIA
The TECNIS® Multifocal lens helps improve both near and distance vision. The lens uses concentric rings or “zones” which the brain learns to “look” through to provide a fuller range of vision. Best if you have an active lifestyle and do not want the hassle of glasses.
Strengths
• Excellent distance vision
• Excellent reading vision
• Often provide independence from glasses for many activities
Limitations
• Can take weeks or months to adapt to vision
• Halos or glare may be seen around lights for some patients
• Glasses may still be needed for some tasks
• May require fine-tuning with laser vision correction
• Must be a candidate
Additional costs above insurance co-pay, co-insurance and/or deductible apply.
Toric
CORRECTS CATARACTS AND REDUCES ASTIGMATISM
Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens. It is normally corrected with glasses or specialty contact lenses, but toric implants are offered to reduce this condition. Best if you’d like to drive without glasses, but don’t mind wearing glasses for reading.
Strengths
• Improved distance vision
• Often provide independence from glasses for distance activities
Limitations
• Glasses are generally needed for either near or distance vision and sometimes both
• Can only correct certain amounts of astigmatism
• May require additional surgery to optimize position
• Must be a candidate
Additional costs above insurance co-pay, co-insurance and/or
deductible apply.
Monovision
Monovision allows one eye to be corrected for distance and the other eye for near vision. The brain does need to adapt to this type of vision; therefore only people who have successfully tried this with contact lenses are candidates for this procedure for cataract surgery.
Additional costs above insurance co-pay, co-insurance and/or deductible apply.
