Traditional Cataract Surgery in Raleigh-Durham

What to Expect From Your Cataract Surgery Procedure

Step 1: Topical anesthesia

Topical anesthesia is applied through drops and/or ointment to the eye to numb the eye for traditional cataract surgery (performed with a clear cornea incision). Recovery is faster than with a needle injection and eliminates the need for an eye patch post-surgery.

Step 2: Clear corneal incision cataract surgery

A clear cornea incision is made (3 mm or smaller) in the perimeter of the cornea near the temple to create a corneal tunnel through which the intraocular lens will be implanted. This entire procedure will take less than 8 minutes on average. The incision is self-sealing, reducing healing time and the possibility of surgically-induced astigmatism.

Step 3: Phacoemulsification

A phacoemulsifier is an ultrasonic probe which vibrates 40,000 times a second, breaking up the cataract into tiny, microscopic pieces which are gently aspirated out of the eye.

Step 4: Intraocular lens (IOL)

Finally, an intraocular lens will be placed inside your eye to take the place of the natural lens that has been removed.
